Living Working Countryside

Here you will find displays and demonstrations of traditional country crafts and skills known to our fathers and grandfathers but seldom seen today. We have Native breeds such as Gloucester cattle and Cotswold sheep and many others.

Do come and visit the Native Breeds area and discover more about our traditional breeds of cattle, horses, pigs, sheep goats and more. Keep a special eye out for the local Gloucestershire breeds, the Gloucester cattle, Gloucester Old Spot pigs and Cotswold sheep.

In the Rural Skills Tent there are many smaller demonstrations of rural crafts to see up close such as spinning and weaving, fly tying, saddlery, basket making as well as the chance to sample the baking and jam making skills of the parishioners at St Mary’s Church Produce stand.

The Living Working Countryside is at the heart of Frampton Country Fair giving us the chance to connect the county traditions with the general public. Many of these traditions are threatened by our increasingly urban lives and we are delighted to welcome the skilled, dedicated country people who are demonstrating and displaying their craft.

Some of the skills to look out for include Mark Roberts – dry stone walling, Keith Payne – master thatcher, The Woodcarvers Association, Blacksmith & Farrier demo’s and amazing metal sculptures from 3 Bees Scrap Art

PUNT GUN DEMONSTRATIONS – 10.00am, 11.00AM, 2.45PM and 4.30pm with Ginger Blayney

Punt Gunning developed around coastal areas in the 19th century as a means of harvesting wildfowl for the commercial market. There is some belief that the originators were ex-gunners used to naval cannons and certainly there have always been ties between punt gunning and naval ports.

Fowl were skilfully stalked over distances, which involved lying prone in the punt using short paddles or poles to propel the punt to within range of the quarry, often through freezing water. The work was hard, cold, always wet and dangerous, and was considered one of the most difficult and demanding of all shooting activities.

The Punt Gun static display overlooks the Court Lake. They will be giving demonstrations, with commentary, during the day. If you have never heard a punt gun go off, now is your chance!
